Home Improvement Colour Trends in Interior Design
Home Improvement colour trends are influenced by many elements including fashion and culture. We have also found that the need for calm in our troubled world has pushed calming colours to the forefront of colour trends.
Houzz has written a great article about interior design colour trends and how they are determined. It is an excellent article, we found it fascinating, though quite long. To save you time, we have taken the time to extract the key pieces of information and to share it with you.
Who are the main influencers for colour trends?
According to Houzz, the major influences of colour trends are the Pantone Color Institute, Dulux, a handful of influential style agencies, and several of the largest paint manufacturers. However, not all of the experts agree on the same colours or even the same colour palettes!
Pantone Colours of the Year
Pantone announces colours of the year each year. One year they even opted for two colours Rose Quartz and Serenity. This is the first time that 2 colours have been selected as the colour of the year by Pantone.
According to Pantone:
‘Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.’
It is fascinating to see that the colour choices here are influenced by the need for peace and calm in the world. We can all take some inspiration from that.
Where would you use these colours? In our opinion, these colours more easily lend themselves towards bedrooms than living areas. However, I am sure that very creative interior decorators would have impressive styling for living areas too.
Dulux Colour of the Year – Cherished Gold
Dulux also announces a colour of the year each year. For example, they opted for the very bold colour of Cherished Gold as their key colour for 2016.
We see this as a brilliant colour to add as an accent. A feature chair or cushion would be an easy way to introduce it.
With warm tones, Cherished Gold would offset beautifully alongside timber such as jarrah floorboards.
But what White is Right? Choosing the right colour White!
If you have ever decided to paint a white wall, you will know that white is the hardest colour of all to choose!
Do you choose a white with undertones of grey, green, yellow? The whole mood of the house can be affected by the right or wrong choice!
American paint company Sherwin-Williams performed a survey to decide which colour of white was their most popular in 2016 and came up with the ever enduring Alabaster (SW 7008).
“Alabaster represents a straightforward and necessary shift to mindfulness. It provides an oasis of calmness, spirituality and ‘less is more’ visual relief. Alabaster is neither stark nor overly warm, but rather an under-stated and alluring white.

Again, we have colours that have been seemingly selected by the primary need for calm and peace in our lives. Interesting.
Future and emerging colour trends
According to the article by Houzz, ‘ blue, turquoise, malachite, lemon and carmine shades to emerge as new trends.’
These are strong and bold colours. It is interesting to note that yellow is represented more than once, with both lemon and cherished gold, so this appears to be a strong trend.
Other colours are seemingly inspired by gems and minerals such as turquoise and malachite (green).
Blues appear to making a strong statement. The colour blue has been credited by psychologists as a fantastic calming colour. As such, it is interesting to see that the strongest trend throughout the emerging colour trends, is that many of the colour choices seem to be inspired by the need for calm in today’s troubled times.
