Character Home Second Story addition, Ground Floor Extension featuring Open Plan Living, with a Pool Room, Alfresco and new Garage

The Home Owners – Jacqui and Brenton – wanted to create a family home that would provide comfortable and stylish living for themselves – a professional couple – and their 2 teenage children for the next 10 to 15 years. With this in mind they purchased a Californian bungalow character home with the specific intention of renovating and extending it to perfectly suit the needs of their growing family.

They have owned several homes and have built with other building companies before. They were experienced with the process and were keen to proceed with a Builder that they could trust to deliver quality and that would listen to their needs.

They approached Amerex and another larger Building Company at the same time. In the initial stages they were very careful and compared the offerings of both Builders before deciding that Amerex was the best fit for them. Amerex worked together with Jacqui and Brenton to design their vision for what turned out to be a large and comprehensive project.

Californian Bungalow in a Heritage Protected Street

Their home renovation included a second story addition to their character home, a spacious extension on the ground floor at the rear, and renovation and remodeling to the front part of the home. At the rear of the property, Amerex also built a Pool Room and a new double Garage. The Californian bungalow house was in a heritage protected area and as such the design factored this is to ensure that the front facade of the home did not change, and the character and charm of the streetscape was retained.

Second Storey Addition floor-plan

The second storey addition upstairs included two large children’s bedrooms. One was designed with a study nook and the other has a gorgeous bay window looking over the backyard. The second storey was built solely as a kids zone, and an activity area that can be used for watching TV or gaming, a separate bathroom and a separate WC.

Home Extension with Open Plan Living

Downstairs the extension at the rear of the home features new spacious open plan living that is flooded with natural light from the east which is particularly stunning in the mornings. This includes a family lounge area, dining and a kitchen which is complete with a Scullery, walk-in Pantry and a spacious Laundry cleverly concealed over to the side. This state of the art Kitchen features clean long lines, caesarstone benchtops with waterfall ends, a window splashback that brings the greenery of nature into the home, and louvres on the side of the splashback that have been cleverly designed to allow the breeze to flow in and provide natural air conditioning for the open plan living area.

Transforming and renovating existing parts of the home

The Master bedroom at the front of the house was an existing room, and Amerex added a luxury ensuite (it looks like it has stepped out of the pages of a Vogue magazine or a high-end hotel brochure) and a stunning custom fit Walk-in robe. The new jarrah staircase to the second storey now stands in the location of the previous kitchen!

Creating Innovative Outdoor Living spaces

Out the back, the new Alfresco area has a built-in outdoor kitchen and features a seamless flow from the indoors to the outdoors. This has been achieved with the design and installation of stackable doors that allow the area to be completely opened up. This is complemented by the construction of a large load-bearing beam that has facilitated a unique column-less corner at the  corner point of where the stackable doors when they are closed. When they are open it allows for this area to be opened up with no barriers at all. Where the corners converge there would normally be a post or column, but with clever construction and great design this has been built without any obstruction in place. At the rear boundary of the property, Amerex have built a separate Pool/Games Room and a Double Garage at the rear.

Keeping Character Home features and working heritage elements into the new areas

The new parts of the home have mirrored the Heritage features of the existing home. To achieve this, Amerex carpenters have created stencils to custom-make door architraves to perfectly match the existing architraves at the front of the home. Heritage skirting and cornices have been included in the new areas, along with gleaming polished jarrah floorboards and a jarrah staircase, balustrade and handrail to complete the tie-in with the character elements of the Californian Bungalow home.

It was an absolute pleasure to deal with the Amerex team for our home renovation. From Steve Burke the office staff & the various tradespeople, we received exceptional customer service. The skilled tradespeople were reliable, obliging & committed to the highest level of quality on our home. NOTHING was too much trouble. Steve, Pete (the foreman ) & the office staff, especially Kelly, were always available either on the phone or on site if we had any queries. We knew we could always make direct contact with them & that any queries would be quickly resolved. We felt that we received a very personal & professional service from the Amerex team. Amerex came in on budget, they completed the work earlier than scheduled & they ensured our renovation ran smoothly throughout. Thank you Amerex. We love our "new" home and our family and friends are amazed at the transformation. We would wholeheartedly recommend Amerex. Eric & Kristine Trevaskis. .

Amerex carried out a large renovation for us in 2015; almost a year-long project. Amerex, lead by Steve, have clearly been in the building industry a long time and offered valuable input and guidance prior to, and during the build. They used skilled tradespeople and quality materials; no corners were cut and I felt confident that the build was of the highest quality. Steve and his team communicated frequently with me along the way and I was involved at every step. I felt comfortable approaching him if I had any questions or concerns, he was always available and acted quickly to resolve any issues. The team at Amerex were reliable, professional and a pleasure to deal with. In particular Kelly, who would often go ‘above and beyond’, was always positive, and nothing was ever too much trouble. People who visit our home always comment on the finish and quality of the build, most believing it’s a new home and not a renovation. I will definitely use Amerex again, and would be happy to recommend them.

This is the first renovation/building undertaking we have experienced and we cannot speak highly enough of the quality Amerex provided. The project design was flawless, and we were extremely impressed with the marrying of the old and new. The attention to detail provided by Steve and his team was outstanding and our friends and family are quick to note this. We love the extra space and seamless flow of our family home. The Amerex commitment to using quality trades and ensuring the trades delivered on time and rectifying issues, was present throughout the building of our home. This gave us great peace of mind and for these reasons we would not hesitate to recommend Amerex.’

The renovation of our home was its third reincarnation as it was originally a very ordinary rectangular 1950s Roman Catholic outpost church which we turned into a house on a tight budget in the late 1980s. As is usually the case, this current renovation was very significant and emotional for me and my family but more unusually, I was living overseas for almost all of the time the renovation was undertaken. We wanted a home that would comfortably accommodate our family and overseas and interstate visitors, provide a focus for entertaining a crowd, as well as being low maintenance and energy efficient. We selected Amerex as our builder because Steve Burke and his very competent team gave our family the confidence that they could be trusted to undertake this renovation professionally and sensitively including communicating progress every step of the way. Steve and his team took our conceptual design and made our vision a reality in very quick time with practical completion of this major renovation within 7 months of the start date. The site supervision was tight which meant that the work progressed easily between the various trades. What is more, the estimated cost of the job was accurate with variations only to suit changes that we required. The outcome was a home that delivers so much more than we expected in terms of comfort, quality and our initial objectives. It was a real pleasure to deal with Steve and his team. I would not hesitate to recommend Amerex to anyone who needs the services of a truly professional builder/renovator.

AMAZING experience. We have just completed a major renovation, and over 18 months dealing with Steve and the AMEREX team. We had a 1930's California bungalow and required the character at the front to be maintained whilst adding almost an entire new house to the back including a second story. We have built twice before, both new homes one with larger builders. The difference between that and our experience with AMEREX was astounding. This was actually an exciting and pleasurable experience throughout. Rather than a number or just "another" client, we were made to feel part of the AMEREX family. The office staff (Loretta, Kelly and Maryanne) are a pleasure to deal with, nothing is ever too much effort. Kelly in particular is a great help with all the various selections and changes and is always smiling! We did not have an issue with a single tradesman throughout. And finally Pete (working foreman) and Steve (owner) are the most hands on, professional and customer focused we have ever met. I was able to speak to either at any time regarding any issue, many times Steve would suggest changes on site to improve the look or function of the renovation and Pete can do it all. No variation fees, complete flexibility, great workmanship direct line to the owners/supervisor, quality finish. We could not recommend AMEREX highly enough. Brenton and Jacqui Seymour Daglish
